Laura Rominger Porter, Ph.D.

I am a historian of the nineteenth-century United States who specializes in religion, the U.S. South, and the Civil War Era (broadly defined). My research explores the connections between evangelical church discipline and southern moral politics to better understand how a people once dedicated to local autonomy, personal liberty and religious apoliticism made peace with the modern politics of legislated morality. I am currently teaching at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
